今や全国に知られる和菓子の一大ブランド、草加せんべい。そのルーツについては諸説ありますが､
最も親しまれているのは「おせんさん」のエピソードです。
昔、日光街道は草加松原の茶店で、おせんさんという女性が団子を売っていました。
おせんさんは売れ残った団子の処分に困っていましたが、ある日、侍が「団子を捨てるのはもったいない。
つぶして乾かし、焼き餅として売ってはどうか」とアドバイス。 おせんさんが焼くこの餅は評判を呼び、街道の名物となりました……
というもの。
その真偽のほどはともかく、草加周辺では昔から、せんべいが手軽な携帯食として親しまれていました。
それは この地が良質な米と水、野田産の醤油など、せんべいの原料に恵まれていたからです。
そして当時盛んだった舟運によって江戸に運ばれた草加せんべいは、粋な江戸っ子好みの菓子として評判を呼び、不動の人気を獲得しました。
現在、市内にあるせんべいの製造所や販売所は70軒以上に及び、名実ともに草加市を代表する名物となっています。
製造工程は機械化されつつありますが、昔ながらの天日干しや手焼きも行われています。
Soka Senbei is the most famous brand of Japanese snacks in Japan !
There are many stories in relation to the origins of Soka senbei but the longest and most believable is the story of “Mrs. Osen”.
A long time ago during the Edo period an old lady called Osen sold dango(rice sweets) at a shop along the road to Nikko. This tea shop's dango were really tasty and the shop had a very good reputation. However, the shop had a problem with what to do with dangos that had dried out.
One day a passing samurai suggested that Mrs. Osen stretched our the dried dango and cooked them. When she tried this she made delicious senbei(rice crackers), that became very popular and this is now the famous Soka senbei is said to have been created !
Whether this is true or not, the land surrouding Soka produces good quality rice, water is plentiful and there are soy souce producers in the neighboring Noda Chiba preferecture. As Soka is blessed with all of these raw ingredients, it has became famous for producing this light and tasty snack.
At present there are more than 70 makers of senbei in Soka, and although we have advanced into an industrialized age, Senbei is still made in the traditional way.
